Chandler’s philosophy of providing a rigorous academic education while taking good care of its students, echoes throughout the lower school. In grades k-2, children are taught the fundamental skills in reading, writing and math. They encounter new ideas and stretch their creativity as they explore subjects such as science, social studies, art, music, and computers. In grades 3-5, children begin to apply their skills to content areas with group project work and demonstrate their knowledge through tests, in-class work, and long-term research assignments. Forming and reinforcing good study skills becomes a significant part of the upper elementary curriculum. In this way, each year from third to fifth grade the children build a repertoire of skills needed for a smooth transition to middle school.
In the Lower School we use Character Counts, a nationally known program as a framework for our children to learn and practice the Six Pillars of Character: respect, fairness, citizenship, responsibility, caring, and trustworthiness. Students in the lower school participate in community service activities on a regular basis, as well.
