THE ARTS
The visual arts or studio art program emphasizes the development of artistic skills, knowledge, and creativity in a variety of media. Students in grades seven and eight have an additional visual art elective opportunity which allows them to specialize in a single area such as photography, ceramics, water-color, or printmaking. Music offerings include string ensemble, participation in the choral group “Joyful Noise,” and classes that focus on creating, composing, music history, and appreciation. Performance opportunities include participation in one of two theater productions each year, participation in the string ensemble or choral group, and other less formal performance oriented opportunities such as Spanish dance, readers’ theater, and story-telling. Each year seventh and eighth grade students create a theater work by writing the text and music, choreographing the dances, and designing sets and costumes.
Special interest electives are offered to students in grades seven and eight. Students may opt to be a member of the editorial and production staff for the student produced publications including the yearbook, student newspaper, and school literary magazine. Examples of other electives offered in the past include gardening, creative writing, French cooking, outdoor survival, pinewood derby, chess club, origami, and community service.
