BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Opportunities are many for students to participate in activities beyond the regular classroom. Lower School classes attend regular assemblies which bring performing groups and special interest presentations on campus. All classes participate in field trips selected to enhance units of study. In addition a number of special events are held annually including Sports-a-thon, 100th Day Celebration, Chandler Spirit Day, Eighth Grade Bike-a-thon, and Big and Little Sister/Brother events joining Lower and Middle School students.
Student Leadership Council
The Student Leadership Council for the Middle School is made up of five leadership commissions (or official groups) that direct student activities in the areas of: Chandler Service; Communication; Community Service; Chandler Spirit; and Sports. Each year sixth, seventh and eighth grade students elect grade level commissioners to serve in each area. The commissioners are responsible for representing student interests and needs, planning activities and recruiting student committees and faculty to assist with specific events.
Community Service
In the Middle School, the Student Leadership Council organizes opportunities for students to participate in community outreach activities throughout the year. These include trick–or–treating for UNICEF, Turkey Round-Up which provides funds for local shelters, donations of canned food to Friends-In-Deed, and holiday parties for local Head-Start children. As a graduation requirement, students in 8th grade undertake individual service projects in the community or within the school giving a minimum of 8 hours of service with more hours encouraged. Students may begin completion of this commitment during the summer prior to 8th grade and must finish by April 30th of their graduating year.
Study Hall and Study Privilege
Each student in the Middle School is assigned to a daily study hall. This supervised class provides students with the opportunity to get a head start on homework assignments, use the library, make up tests or assignments missed due to absence, work in the computer lab, and receive assistance from teachers or the Resource Center. Students in the 7th and 8th grade who have achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average (honors) are placed on Study Privilege. This privilege allows students to work independently in the courtyard or library after checking in with their assigned study hall supervisor. Students are expected to use this time wisely or the privilege will be lost. Each quarter the list of students on study privilege is updated according to the most recent report card.
Youth Organizations
Chandler Chess Club, an afterschool activity for students in grade three through middle school, meets regularly for instruction and competition and sends our top players to compete nationally during the year.
Through the volunteer efforts of Chandler parents, activities such as Girl and Boy Scout programs are offered after school. Chandler provides facilities for meetings and special activities.
The Summer Academic Bridge Program is required of, and limited to, all new Chandler students entering grades six and seven in the fall. The morning program consists of two classes, math and English, taught by Chandler faculty and designed to help new students make a smooth transition into the school by introducing them to the academic program, expectations and culture of the school, other new classmates and faculty. By working with the new students during the summer, the school can develop a better understanding of new students’ abilities and needs. This mutual knowledge is a critical factor to new student success in the Chandler middle school program.
Student Publications
The Tower, Chandler’s school yearbook, is published each year by Middle School students who are responsible for creating designing, photographing, writing and editing the entire book which is now produced entirely on computer. Images, Chandler’s literary magazine, is also produced through the work of middle school students who are responsible for all aspects of its publication from the solicitation and selection of student contributions of short stories, essays, and poetry as well as artwork, to the layout and design of the magazine. Middle school students also write articles, format the layout, print and distribute The Chandler Chronicle, an internal newspaper by and for the middle school students.
