PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS
Chandler’s physical education and competitive athletic program for middle school students includes fitness, skill building, health issues and intramural sports. Students participate in a daily physical education class and may elect to participate in the competitive sports program in grades seven and eight. As a member of the Middle School Independent League consisting of other independent schools in this area, Chandler’s interscholastic teams compete after school fielding both boys’ and girls’ teams in flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field, and baseball for boys or softball for girls. Co-ed competition is offered in tennis, swimming, and golf. All interested and committed students are encouraged to participate. With sufficient interest and numbers, Chandler fields multiple teams providing appropriate opportunities for competition or skill-building based on student needs. Chandler aims to instill sportsmanship and commitment while working towards a common goal of healthy team competition and personal growth.
Physical education is a part of each student’s daily schedule. The purpose is to develop self-esteem, pride and an appreciation of teamwork through physical and motor development emphasizing sportsmanship, physical fitness and personal growth. The Middle School program adds more motor and wellness skill building. Students are required to participate daily unless the Athletic Department is notified in writing of an injury, illness or medical condition. Other appropriate physical activities may be scheduled. All students are expected to dress in the Chandler athletic uniform. Non-dress will result in a lowered P.E. grade. The Middle School competitive athletic program consists of interscholastic teams for boys and girls in flag football,
basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, tennis, swimming, golf, baseball and softball as a member of the Middle School Independent League. Students participating or assisting with competitive team sports earn points towards the Chandler Athletic letter. Chandler’s strong athletic tradition of healthy team competition and sportsmanship builds healthy minds in healthy bodies.

7th and 8th Grade Competitive Team Sports Program:
Philosophy: To teach students participating in interscholastic teams the basic fundamentals of the sport, strategies, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
How teams are chosen: A try-out is held for each sport. Students are placed on teams based on the following criteria:
- Commitment to the Chandler Team
- Attitude and behavior toward coaches and peers
- Ability to work on a team to reach a common team goal and accepting coaches’ decisions
- Skill level
Due to the number of students who try out for the teams and the limited play time created by large team membership, not all students may make the A or B teams, therefore we have started a C team in some sports to allow students the opportunity to participate in competitive sports and build skills through game time.
A Team:Usually consists of only 8th grade students unless insufficient participants try out. A competitive team that will play to win the league title. Players will not play equal minutes and some may not play at all in some games. All students are given the option of being on the C team, if available.
B Team: Usually consists of only 7th grade students. A competitive team that plays to win. Players will not play equal minutes and some may not play at all in some games. All students are given the option of being on the C team, if available.
C Team: 7th and 8th grade team that allows the participants an opportunity to develop their skills through practice and games. Everyone plays on a C team.
