Chandler’s Middle School instills self-reliance and confidence in students through many intentional challenges. Among students’ most-beloved programs is the Boojum Institute outdoor adventure that each Middle School class completes together. When asked about their favorite Middle School experiences, Chandler alumni consistently cite Boojum trips among their very best memories.

To see the fun students had on this year's trips, watch this short slideshow.

This fall, Chandler's sixth grade went to Joshua Tree National Park. There, the students encountered outdoor adventure, personal challenge, the opportunity to work together, and time to get to know one another better. The experience helps to unify the class for the current year as well as years to come.

Under clear skies, students, their sixth-grade faculty, and the Boojum Institute expert wilderness guides enjoyed camping and camp craft, rock climbing, hiking, cooking, natural history lessons, advisory and class games, campfire evening activities and more.

Seventh graders, their seventh-grade faculty, and Boojum trip leaders participated in Chandler’s annual five-day canoe trip along the Colorado River. Located near Boulder City, Nevada, this stretch of the river is wide and relatively slow moving, providing a leisurely paddle down the river with opportunities to beach canoes and explore the terrain.

The river trip provides the opportunity for seventh graders to develop a strong group relationship and personal self-reliance. Students also discover the opportunity to learn beyond the walls of the classroom. The trip began on Lake Mead for canoe and water safety instruction. Students and faculty then entered the river in two groups, one below Hoover Dam, and a second at Willow Creek Marina.

This fall, the eighth grade class participated in Chandler’s annual six-day backpack trip in the Sierras. The wilderness adventure provides a special way for students to start their final year together at Chandler amidst beautiful mountain views, alpine lakes and starry skies.

Chandler regards the Boojum Institute trips as an essential part of fulfilling the school’s mission to develop good character, self-reliance and a commitment to community in students as a foundation for academic and personal success.
