Boojum Trips: A Chandler Tradition

They are a rite of passage, a chance to grow closer and bond as a class in a non-school environment. Outdoor education adventures are not only a part of the Chandler School curriculum, they help students disconnect from their electronic devices, become more self-reliant and interact in a collaborative way towards a common goal.
They are a rite of passage, a chance to grow closer and bond as a class in a non-school environment. Outdoor education adventures are not only a part of the Chandler School curriculum, they help students disconnect from their electronic devices, become more self-reliant and interact in a collaborative way towards a common goal.

Chandler’s outdoor education trips are organized through the Boojum Institute for Experimental Education in a partnership that has existed for over 30 years. Boojum and Chandler partner to deliver a three-year staged approach to building environmental awareness and expedition skills within our students. These trips build student confidence and are almost always among a Chandler student’s fondest memories. During their Boojum trips, students strengthen their relationships with their friends and some come upon unexpected new friendships during these unforgettable adventures.

Sixth graders scramble, hike and rock climb in the high desert of Joshua Tree National Park. This three-day adventure teaches students about desert ecology, wilderness conservation and basic camping skills.
Seventh graders paddle the Colorado River near Boulder City, Nevada. They start at Lake Mead, where they receive canoe and safety instructions. Students then swim, hike and paddle the river on an unforgettable five-day journey.

Eighth graders hike trails, scale peaks and learn outdoor ethics while on a six-day backpacking trip in the Sierras. During their trip, they are treated to breathtaking mountain views, alpine lakes and starry nighttime skies.

Students return with an experience that not only carries them through their final years at Chandler but way beyond.
