Throughout these five weeks, students will explore the many aspects of creative expression, including singing, dramatic plays, painting, and sculpture. Explore the wonderful world of basketball! Have you met Airbud? Smoke or Superstar ??? Join us this summer to meet them and get a chance to learn all the basics of basketball. Hoopin’ It up is the place to learn and develop the Fun-da-mentals of Basketball through a variety of fun, challenging activities. You will improve your skills by participating in our hot-shot shooting contests, full-court drills, daily defense and office technique practice, competitive and non-competitive games and much, much more. “Hoop it up” with us, meet new people, and enjoy the family-like ambiance as we build confidence, team unity and spirit.
JUMP INTO FIRST GRADE / Grade 1 / Mrs. Standing
Join one of Chandler’s veteran Kindergarten co-teachers as she guides you toward an easier transition into first grade. You will review all the essential fundamental skills, including phonics, sight word reading, basic math concepts, handwriting, socialization, critical thinking, and more. The learning tools you will receive will help reinforce a stronger foundation that will add confidence and fulfillment to your first grade experience.
JUNIOR MAD SCIENTISTS AND MATH WIZARDS / Grades 1-2 / Materials Fee: $20 / Mrs. Gotha
Explore the worlds of science and math with daily hands-on experiments. In addition, weekly cooking sessions will prove that working with fractions can be delicious. The course is designed for budding scientists and mathematicians. The lessons are structured to improve the ability to listen and follow sequential directions, to strengthen observation skills, and to develop logical reasoning—all while having fun!

The magic of movies is here! Students use camera tricks and green screens to make a DVD of wild special effects. Children fly into space, dissolve into thin air and grow to be a hundred feet tall in this mind-boggling class. No previous flying experience necessary.
BREAKFAST AND BAKING / Grades 1-8 / Materials Fee: $50 / Mrs. Izbicki
A fun and nutritious way to begin the day while learning the basic skills and techniques of baking. We’ll be preparing an easy and healthful breakfast from recipes selected by the class from cookbooks designed for children. During the period we will prepare a well balanced meal while learning to read and follow recipes. We’ll also be making many favorites like granola, muffins, breads, and cookies. The class will emphasize an understanding of baking tools, ingredients and terminology while focusing on good eating habits and health and safety in the kitchen.

MOSAICS / Grades 2-8 / Materials Fee: $15 / Mrs. Leese
Mosaics have been made by many cultures over many centuries. You will see mosaics of the past and create your own from sand, tiny tiles and large, one of a kind tiles. You will wor k with paper, paint, clay, sand and ceramic tiles. We’ll make mosaic note cards, a mosaic trivet and a mosaic that could be a small table.

Learn golf from a professional. You will be transported from Chandler to Brookside Golf Course and back for this two-period golf class where their head instructor will teach you basic swing fundamentals including putting, chipping, pitch shots and full swing—irons and woods. Juniors will also become proficient in basic rules, etiquette, protocol and golf history. In addition, players will participate in fun competitions and spend a lot of time playing on the golf course. Clubs, balls and any other needed equipment will be provided by Brookside, although you are welcome to use your own. Maximum 8 students.
MATH REVIEW / Grades 3-5 / Materials Fee: $20 / Ms. Palfrey
This individualized class will offer a review of grades two, three, and four math skills and concepts. You will be given a grade-level diagnostic assessment at the beginning of the summer session to discover in which areas of math you need to improve. Then you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in those areas and will be given a post-test afterward to show that you have been successful. Daily math facts drills will also be part of the curriculum, and math games will add interest and variety to the class. An incentive program will help keep enthusiasm high.
JOURNALISM / Grades 3-8 / Mrs. Laird (Payne)
Want to be a journalist? Experience the life as a newspaper reporter, editor, graphic designer, or even cartoonist. Learn the techniques journalists use to “break” the big stories. This group will be documenting many aspects of Chandler Summer life while creating a newspaper. We will use the internet, digital cameras, and books as research tools for the stories. Students will also practice their interviewing and note-taking techniques, and they will even engage in more creative writing pieces for the paper as well. At the end of the class, a newspaper will be created to take home and share with the entire summer program.
LOGIC, REASONING & SUDOKU / Grades 5-8 / Materials Fee: $10 / Mr. Laird
Who says word problems can’t be fun! This course will explore a number of different logic problems, from word to numeric to visual, and teach you how to approach even the most brain busting teaser. Problems will be presented with increasing difficulty throughout the class, culminating with you creating your own book of mind twisters. You will learn how to gather relevant facts from a paragraph or set of clues, organize information in simple visual form and solve problems commonly found in standardized tests and entrance exams. These skills will be useful through college!

Welcome to life after preschool! Come and travel with other students who are making the passage between nursery school and kindergarten. This course design engages as well as educates children of this young and tender age. Your child will take on many stimulating challenges in a nurturing and fun environment. Each student will focus on developing the qualities of respect, kindness, self-esteem, and self-discipline through cooperative games and activities. Daily happenings will include enriching math games, inventive craft projects, motivating spelling and phonics tasks, and energizing outdoor play.

Need some assistance in reinforcing or mastering your child's phonics skills....then you have chosen the right course! This in-depth class will review all the basic phonics skills that are necessary to be a successful reader, writer, and speller....using art. Unlocking the mysteries of the English language along with the difficult rules and patterns has never been so much fun. Your child will use his/her imagination to creatively learn short and long vowels, blends, and digraphs that will prepare them to be more confident students in language arts! This class is almost as easy as the ABC's !

Children will learn basic gymnastics on all the events, including tumbling, bars, vault, and balance beam, in addition to enjoying a variety of engaging movement games. Everything will be age appropriate and fun. A circuit will be set up so that all students are moving at the same time. The philosophy of GymnastiKids is to professionally teach students gymnastics in a fun and safe atmosphere and proactively enhance their self-esteem.

In this class, specifically designed for English Language Learners, you will experience the joy of learning English. TAE KWON DO / Grades 1-8 / Mr. Park
Martial arts instruction helps tune both the mind, through mental discipline, and the body, through physical discipline. In this class, students will develop inner strength, self-discipline, self-confidence, and strong character while learning a non-violent form of self-defense. As they study and practice the Tae Kwon Do skills, they will also develop physical strength, speed, balance, flexibility, stamina and a respect for parents, teachers, other adults and each other. Students will be expected to purchase a uniform for $45 from the Young Park Institute prior to the beginning of the class.

In this class we will be learning techniques for designing and hand painting a beautiful, sturdy step stool. Each student will have their own stool. We’ll begin with an unfinished piece and learn about preparation, free hand design, stenciling (maybe a name on the stool), choosing paints and colors, and finishing the piece with a protective coating. If time allows, we will also work on a smaller piece.

This class is for wizards and scientists. Awesome mixtures and concoctions such as slime and magic mud will be created. Science experiments will be set up and performed. Wor k will be done individually and in groups. Definitely “hands on.” Since heating elements may be used, this course is designed for serious, self-disciplined scientists, mature enough to handle equipment properly
READING MADE FUN / Grades 3-8 / Mrs. Laird (Payne)
The focus of this class is to create lifetime readers. In this class, students will learn techniques that will help them when reading for academic classes, standardized tests, and pleasure. Note-taking skills and retention of basic facts will be taught. Students will also be a part of a book group for their age group to discover the pleasure of reading too. A book for each age group will be decided upon the first two days of school.

Wor k with your hands! This basic woodshop course is appropriate for beginning to expert craftspeople. We will create a variety of toys and gifts from tool boxes to derby cars, napkin holders to birdhouses. You will learn shop safety, the use of basic hand tools, project planning, types of wood, wood finishing and much more. You will also get your own set of tools to keep at the end of the class. New projects available for returning students.

Beginning to advanced ceramicists can join this class to wor k with clay and glazes. You will use hand building techniques, molds and the potter’s wheel to make mosaics, sculptures, cups, plates and much more!

You will learn about jewelry findings, stone, metal, and lampwork beads. You’ll learn the basics of wire work and the proper use of jeweler’s tools. Have fun with friends and learn to cheer! This class is an introductory cheerleading and movement class that will be a blast. Participants will learn the basics of cheerleading motions, jumps, cheers, and dance. We will also try a little tumbling and beginning stunts. Cheerleaders perform a routine in which they incorporate all the cheers, jumps, tumbling and dance learned during the class.

Have you ever thought what you can do besides just pointing and pressing the button on your camera? Do you know the difference between digital and film? Have you ever created a t-shirt with your image on it? Well, if you are interested, then this is the class for you! Come join us on this fun journey where kids can begin to express themselves through the creation of photographic images. Using techniques such as self-portraits, travelogues, nature and action shooting and exciting trick photography, children will have an opportunity to create t-shirts, bags, puzzles, aprons, frames, scrapbooks, story books and other treasured images of the imagination. Children will also learn how to make visual decisions by understanding the variety of images they see daily. Our goal is to look more carefully at the world around us, focusing and concentrating on its beauty. We will conclude with the creation of our own photo gallery.

Bring your dramatic talent and your sense of fun to this engaging class. Everyone gets a part. Once parts have been selected, each group will create its own staging and costuming. Performances before an audience will be presented. The class is open to fluent (and not so fluent) readers; dramatic (and not so dramatic) actors; bold (and not so bold) performers. Emphasis will be on improving reading fluency and expression. The ability to speak clearly and comfortably in front of a group will be developed. Working cooperatively in a team as well as demonstrating individual initiative will be encouraged.

Get ready for some fun in the kitchen as you learn basic cooking skills while enjoying a well balanced meal. With a selection of over 100 children’s cookbooks from which to choose, you will learn to read recipes and prepare items that sound good and are good for you. Included will be a variety of well known favorites like CPK pizzas, Panda Inn Orange Chicken and Sizzling Rice Soup, sushi and pasta. Menus will also include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and blender drinks. We’ll focus on recipes that you can make at home with some adult supervision and you’ll have a collection of great recipes and ideas for breakfasts, school lunches, parties and snacks.

Do you love papier mâchè and getting goopy glue all over your hands? Let’s make masks of our faces, hands, feet and even arms and legs and then decorate them with paint, feathers, beads, wire, yarn, you name it. Students will make various masks based on ethnic cultural traditions including their own. One of these masks will be a self portrait representing who the student is and where he/she comes from.

Someone once said, “the key to life is through knowing how to express yourself.” In this class we will work on helping students put what they are thinking in their heads down on the page. We will specifically focus on sentence structure, paragraph, and essay writing. We will also work on making sentences flow together, thus making a coherent paragraph. Students will also have the opportunity to write a creative story and present it to their classmates. This lesson will focus on using adjectives, adverbs and active verbs to enhance the simple sentence.

Using the awesome "Scratch" program designed by MIT and UCLA, students create their very own computer programs using drag-and-drop computer language. In our outspoken world, it is important that people feel comfortable speaking in public. To ensure relaxation in speaking, students will practice different speech and verbal techniques such as voice projection, eye contact, body language and word emphasis. In efforts to improve upon these skills, students will do demonstrative speeches where they will teach their classmates in a step-by-step form how to do something they enjoy. During these speeches students will work on eye contact and pace. They will also practice persuasive speaking and writing during class elections. Students will also go through an interview, similar to the interviews for schools, scholarships, and summer programs. The class will practice acting out a short play. The focus during the play will be on body language and word emphasis. Students will also create and present a power point presentation to the class. This class is a lot of fun, while teaching the importance of strong verbal skills.

Throughout each week, you will explore the diverse environments in which various animals live. You will discover how and why certain animals have adapted to their surroundings. Come along as we play games, read books, perform experiments, and even make tasty treats connected to different habitats.

This class will stress the basics with needle and thread, with hand sewing as the emphasis. You will learn to sew a straight line, make those small stitches, sew on a button and make a patch. Projects will include a bean bag, a pillow cover and maybe a hat, and you will have your own sewing kit to use and take home. You may be asked to purchase some fabrics and thread to match. Blast off into the summer while taking a journey through the wonderful world of rockets. You will learn to build and paint two of your own rockets and launch them into space using your own launcher, which you will then be able to take home to use for future launches. Learning how to safely launch will also be a key to having a successful mission. Throughout the course, you will learn about the people, history, and mechanics that made our space exploration program what it is today.

Enjoy learning some gardening tips while tending our three student gardens. We will pot, till, weed, feed, and seed both annuals and some vegetables, too, and you will have some of your own gardening tools and plants to take home with you at the end of the class. You will learn the technique of polymer clay caning, beginning with simple canes and gradually learning how to make intricate designs. You’ll turn each cane into work of art! This course is designed to be fun with emphasis on improving reasoning, logical thinking, and observation skills. Logic puzzles (both word and number) will be presented daily. Short mysteries will be read and discussed. Card games and puzzles also will be used in class. Although some clues and assistance will be given, the student will be expected to persevere and accept the challenges. Wor k will be done individually and in groups. The class will be interesting to all ages, but good reading skills are required.

Students will have fun writing both poetry and fiction. This class is designed for students to have fun while using their imagination. Creative writing skills such as metaphors, similes, descriptive writing, foreshadowing, and characterization will be taught and expanded upon through activities that work towards a finished piece. At the end of class, students will make a hand-sewn boo k with all their writing to share with others.

You get to build your own radio-controlled vehicle from start to finish. Everyone will assemble a top-of-the-line Erector R/C truck set, which offers three different models and a variety of customization options. Once the trucks are built, you will create your own obstacle course for timed trials. You will also be able to take home your completed project to use in future racing events. Side Street Projects’ creative woodworking program for kids seeks to teach children how to use tools safely, effectively and (ultimately) independently of adult assistance. Classes will be held in a brightly colored mobile classroom: a renovated transit bus that houses 10 woodworking stations custom made for children. Each station is equipped with hand tools, adjustable workbenches, supplies and materials. There are two artist-teachers per bus, providing a 5:1 student/teacher ratio at all times. Children are encouraged to examine the relationship between process and form, technique and creativity, thus learning that these variables can exist simultaneously. Bottle caps, candy tins, feathers, toothbrushes, magazines, Barbie doll arms and legs, pipe cleaners, beads, yarn, fabric, wrapping paper----let’s collage these treasures together and make ART. Bring an old shoe to the first class and see it transform into the most amazing sculpture you have ever seen. This class is for the student who loves to use their imagination by mixing various materials together to make something new and creative. Students will make a self-portrait out of magazines, brown paper bags and tons of glue. Shadow boxes, weaving and macramé can be incorporated in student work as well.

Learn how to be a camp counselor and gain hands-on training. The goal of the CIT program is to provide interested adolescents with an opportunity to wor k with younger children as they develop leadership skills in a comfortable atmosphere under the supervision of the Camp Director. Costs will cover two days of instructional learning on Tuesdays and Thursdays and one day of on-the-job training experience. On Fun Fridays students will accompany the Camp on field trips and assist the counselors. You will also have the option to work on Mondays and Wednesdays as a CIT to put into practice all that you are learning. Topics covered will include leadership training, activity planning, safety and first aid, games, and general knowledge to be a successful counselor.

Here is your chance to be a part of a very impressive collaborative art project. Do you love to draw and paint and get your hands really dirty? We work as a team and help each other create a gorgeous mural together. We can copy a famous painting and/or design a unique work of art. You design the project. You paint the project. I teach you techniques and offer hints and suggestions.
LATE AFTERNOON HIKES (T, W, Th only; 3:00 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.) / Grades 3-6 / $35 per hike / Mr. McCarty
Get set for some outdoor fun as you hike and explore with experienced hiker and Chandler third grade teacher, John McCarty. This is the perfect way to take advantage of our community’s nearby hiking trails. Knowing what to do and how to behave in a wilderness environment can be valuable skills to have. You’ll come away with the knowledge needed to hike safely as you enjoy nature and just have fun.
The hikes will take you to various locations in the local foothills, canyons and mountains. Hiking sites are varied and are determined on the day of each hike with the focus on avoiding excessive heat and smog. All hikes will take place along streams and end at shallow swimming holes where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in some cooling water before heading back to the van for the return trip. You may sign up for as many or as few hikes as fit into your summer schedule.

Get set for some great volleyball at Will Rogers State Beach (north of Santa Monica Pier). Trained Arroyo Volleyball Club staff will provide skilled volleyball instruction on beach volleyball courts with a 1:10 staff to student ratio. Optional beach activities will also be available (lifeguard station at site). Weekly and daily enrollment is offered for this all-day ( 8:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.) beach program; bus transportation is provided.
