Eighth Grade
Language Arts continues to expand upon students’ spelling, vocabulary and grammar skills. While reading, analyzing, discussing and writing about novels, Junior Great Books, and plays, students think critically about the theme and understand the biographical, historical and scientific background of the story. They learn to develop each paragraph separately with a thesis sentence and supporting details. Responding to a variety of ideas and prompts, students learn to write with imagination and originality. The elements of drama are discussed and students read, interpret and enact dramatic dialogue. They also memorize and present a poem with props and costumes in a poetry contest.
Mathematics classes are divided into four sections according to pace and readiness. Students continue to develop algebra and geometry concepts through routine practice and application with problem solving. All students complete a minimum of Algebra I by the end of eighth grade.
Social Studies focuses on U.S. history from the first Native American settlements to the present day. Students use the library to research topics. One such research project includes a portrait of 19th century life presented in a diary format. Throughout the year, students also study geography and civics.
Science introduces the physical sciences. Through numerous lab experiments, students increase their lab skills and learn lab safety. They are able to separate and identify several elements and compounds from a prepared unknown, and end the year using all their lab skills to find “Substance X”.
Foreign Language continues to work toward proficiency by learning more specialized vocabulary and grammar. Students practice speaking, reading, writing and listening and complete the equivalent of one to two years of high school level language classes by the end of eighth grade.
Technology is completely integrated in all areas of the curriculum. Student use all the skills and programs learned in previous computer classes for projects and assignments in the various eighth grade classes.
Physical Education continues with a competitive sports team program in football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, track, tennis, golf and swimming. Students continue to earn points towards the Chandler Athletic Letter. Those who do not wish to compete take regular P.E. classes.
Art explores modes of expression in art including realism, abstraction and expressionism, in a semester course. Students further develop their skills in self-expression and emphasis is placed on self-evaluation and critical thinking. Students are also required to complete an additional quarter of art in an elective of their choice.
Music continues with a required quarter each of music and performance instruction. Choices for the music requirement include classical connections, percussion ensemble and the Joyful Noise choral group. Performance choices include drama productions, mock trial, Spanish dance, and readers’ theater.
Electives include a required personal development rotation between High School Survey (preparation for applying to high school), Tolerance (an examination of bias and prejudice in American society and the efforts to break the cycle), CPR (program for certification in CPR and first aid) and Self Defense (a one week course that encourages student safety, confidence, and self-care). Students also have the opportunity to explore fun activities such as quilting, gardening, cooking, beading and games of strategy in weekly electives offered each quarter.
Outdoor Education culminates with a five day backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Chandler faculty and Boojum Institute instructors guide and challenge students to build class unity and teamwork, and develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural environment.
