Don't Call It a Comeback - Chandler Youth Sports Knock Out the Competition

“While it’s been nice having kids on the field and on the court again competing, it’s really gratifying to see them out there just having fun,” says Director of Athletics Bill Anderson.
While Youth Sports was canceled last year, benching our athletes, middle schoolers continued practicing at home or participating in some club sports to keep their skills sharp.

Bill says that these 7th and 8th graders are particularly talented in sports; in fact, he’s received many comments from faculty and parents about the possibility of having many teams - both girls and boys - go undefeated this year. And with more than 80% of 7th and 8th graders and 75% of 6th graders playing sports this year, it shows just how interested Chandler middle schoolers are in sports and how they work at balancing academics and play.

Bringing back youth sports was no easy feat. Health and safety protocols require a dedicated support team of staff and parents to limit guests, screen visitors, drive athletes to and from games, among other things. Director of Facilities Nancy Hutton says, even with the visitor vaccine mandate, Chandler School still has parents volunteering on campus to help in anything from Youth Sports to CFA Hot Lunch to storytime in the Lower School. “Chandler parents are really stepping up this year for our students - volunteering for multiple opportunities, reimagining events, and really coming together,” says Assistant Director of Advancement & Community Engagement Jennifer Johnson ‘94. “We were happy to welcome parents as they cheered on Chandler athletes,” she continues. One parent even got into some of the action when he caught a punt from the Chandler parent viewing area.

For the first season of the year, Girls Volleyball and Boys Football knocked out the competition, as both teams won the banner! Girls A Team, undefeated in the league, finished the season with a 7-1 record, winning league champs and claiming 1st place in playoffs. Girls B Team, with a 4-2 record in the league, had their share of wins. The talented A Football Team, 5-0, went undefeated the entire season and participated in playoffs at Rio Hondo Prep earlier this week. B Football was also undefeated with a record of 7-0.

This week, practice begins for Boys Soccer, Girls Basketball, and Boys and Girls Tennis Teams. Faculty and staff have joined parents in the audience in bleachers and on the sidelines to witness the talent at every level, exciting games, and cheers from a community silenced only momentarily by COVID.

Games for the next season start on November 1, at 3:00 p.m. View the new Athletics Calendar in the next Cloverleaf. For more information about Youth Sports, contact the Director of Athletics Bill Anderson, or to attend an athletics event, please see Chandler’s Youth Sports Protocols
