Head of School's Message: February 28

Smiles went viral at Chandler School last week as masks came off outside, and faces were exposed. “I had no idea she had braces,” said a lower school teacher at recess about one of her students who was playing on the field.
She added, “What I liked about Zoom was being able to see my students' faces. It’s harder to know how they are feeling when you can’t see their whole face.” Last week the lower school students were preparing for this week's Sports-a-Thon by running laps around the field and leaping over hurdles. One of the P.E. teachers commented that with masks removed, she was able to see the full range of students’ emotions to which those of you visiting the campus this week for Sports-a-Thon will bear witness.

We will continue to follow Pasadena’s Health Department masking requirements for schools. Pasadena’s Health Department will be meeting today, and the guideline will be refreshed tomorrow. Until the local health department determines otherwise, masks need to be worn in the classrooms. Now that we are in a situation in which masks can be on-again and off-again, the phenomena of the lost or misplaced mask will be a small price to pay for the joy of seeing faces unencumbered outside.

Last Tuesday faculty, staff and administrators spent a productive day reviewing the work of Chandler’s Strategic Planning sub-committees. Trustee Erin Baker chairs Chandler’s Strategic Planning Committee. She writes about the committee’s progress in this Cloverleaf. Every five years, Chandler produces a new strategic plan. It’s a requirement of our membership in the California Association of Independent Schools. When I started at Chandler twenty-one years ago, the board had completed working with the school on a strategic plan that addressed the academic program, retaining and recruiting the best teachers, building community, bringing computer technology into the school and committing to more diversity. With Chandler’s mission as a compass, the strategic plan became a roadmap. As we plan for a leadership transition, the next strategic plan will help Chandler’s new head of school work with the community to set a course for the future.
