Celebrating Dia de los Reyes Magos: A New Joyful Tradition at Chandler School

Chandler School middle schoolers recently witnessed a delightful and educational celebration of Dia de los Reyes Magos during their advisory period.
This heartwarming event, filled with cultural significance and camaraderie, left both students and staff with cherished memories.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the traditional "Rosca de Reyes." The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air as students eagerly gathered around. The circular shape of the rosca de reyes symbolizes the crowns of the Three Wise Men and the sweet, fruity bread is a hallmark of this cherished holiday.

As students broke off pieces of the rosca, excitement grew. Hidden within the bread was a small figurine representing the baby Jesus. Those fortunate enough to find the baby in their slice were not only blessed with good luck but also rewarded with extra credit. This element of surprise and anticipation added an extra layer of joy to the celebration as students eagerly inspected their portions, hoping to uncover the tiny treasure.

But the celebration went beyond the delicious treats. Spanish Teacher Sra. Vasquez took the opportunity to share the rich history and cultural significance of Dia de los Reyes Magos. With engaging storytelling and informative visuals, students were transported to the traditions of countries like Mexico, Spain and various Latin American cultures that hold this holiday close to their hearts.

Through this immersive experience, students gained a deeper understanding of the Three Wise Men's journey and the symbolism behind their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They learned about the tradition of leaving their shoes out on the night before the holiday in the hopes of finding gifts from the wise men the next morning.

The Dia de los Reyes Magos celebration at Chandler School exemplified the power of cultural enrichment within an academic environment. It allowed students to embrace diversity and appreciate the traditions of their peers, fostering a sense of unity and respect.
