Celebrating Black Culture

This month our schedule has been filled with opportunities to uplift and celebrate Black history, culture and identities through various learning and experiential events.
In addition to our Middle School guest speaker, Stephen Leach (Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, People and Culture at The Walt Disney Studios), and Ina the Sunshine Storyteller who shared Kenyan folktales with the Lower School, we have also welcomed a Double Dutch team to our campus as well as representatives from the illustrious Divine Nine sororities and fraternities.

Our Lower School students spent two days learning about and experiencing the joys and challenges of Double Dutch. Rooted in the Black community, Double Dutch is a beautiful aspect of Black culture that rose to prominence in the 1950s and has evolved into a worldwide competitive sport. Each of the kindergarten through fifth-grade classes teamed up with our special guests, Melanated Jump Squad, to learn about the history of Double Dutch and experience its rhythm firsthand.

In Middle School, our students participated in an assembly honoring the Divine Nine. Launched on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, these nine fraternities and sororities have been an important resource for support and service in the educational experience for Black students. The Divine Nine hold significant meaning in the Black community and are committed to promoting leadership, scholarship, and community service. During the assembly, our student speakers led the Middle School in learning about the history of the Divine Nine and moderated a panel of parents and community members who are proud members of these Black Greek Letter Organizations. We truly appreciate the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. who joined us to share their insight, wisdom and experiences.

A special thank you also to our Chandler parents and employees who contributed their time and talents to our Black History Month Planning Team. Their efforts and dedication continue to make a tremendous impact on our School. It is a joy to be a part of a community committed to uplifting one another in meaningful and authentic ways.
